Poverty mentality or materialism is the state of focusing on and craving for earthly possessions rather than seeking God’s kingdom first and focusing on heavenly things. As you’ll see shortly, some of us inherited the poverty mentality from our parents as we observed their habits and heard them talk about money. And the rest of it came from our experiences.
Christians who hate the world and refuse to conform to the standards of the world will experience pain. They discipline themselves to remain obedient to Christ. They deny themselves the pleasures of the world. Because of this, they’re hated and persecuted because they refuse to join their persecutors in sin.
“Examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely you know that Jesus Christ is among you; if not, you have failed the test of genuine faith.” (2 Corinthians 13:5)
Look out for a man who loves God more than He loves work, money or you. If God is first in his life, God will pour His love into your man’s heart so he can love you as God expects of him.
Nowadays, greed and coveting are clothed in ambition and drive to succeed. It’s respectable for a man to be preoccupied with getting his dream house, dream car or dream job at the expense of others – his family, company or country – without shame. The world cheers him on and calls him smart if has tangible possessions to show for it.
